Description
Pastors and others in healing ministry deal with broken, hurting people every day. Often we don't know how to help. We refer people to other professionals when perhaps we ourselves might be the ones who could best offer what people need. This training program will focus on:

  • Helping us reclaim our unique contribution as pastors and people of faith: the role of worship and ritual in the healing process, the therapeutic value of confession and forgiveness, the function of shepherding people to allow God to heal their pain, the practice of laying on of hands.

  • Theoretical background and practical skills.

  • A model of healing ministry which is both theologically and psychologically responsible

Gestalt Pastoral Care is a model of healing ministry that integrates Gestalt growth work, Christian spiritual companioning, and healing prayer. ĘGestalt Pastoral Care rests on the belief that God's healing grace is available to us, and that God desires to heal holistically -- body, mind, spirit, emotions and social context -- in a way that is unique for each person. ĘThis course will focus on:

  • Gestalt theory, pastoral skills, and personal growth work
  • Reclaiming our unique contribution as pastors and people of faith by integrating Christian practices, such as worship, personal liturgies and prayer, the laying on of hands, confession and forgiveness in the healing process
  • Shepherding people to respond to God's invitation to wholeness and healing

Sample topics include: Gestalt theory and practice; healing prayer; function and mechanism of resistance; spiritual brokenness; healing from sexual trauma; establishing a healing environment; faith imagination; dream work.

This course is an integrative approach that gives participants the opportunity to learn and grow through:

  • discussions on theory and practice
  • demonstrations of applied GPC and focus skills highlighting the topic of the day
  • supervised experiential work in a small group setting
  • contemplative prayer
  • awareness exercises
  • breath and energy work
  • case study reviews (optional)
